Description

Department: Public Works, Buildings Division

Job Scope: Reporting to the Janitor, responsible and accountable for the cleaning of civic buildings.

Main Functions

  • Wear personal protective equipment and clothing as directed by your employer and material safety data sheet (MSDA).
  • Know the potential hazards and safe handling practices for all cleaning and disinfecting products and equipment to be used.
  • Follow procedures and materials safety data sheets for cleaners and disinfectants used to ensure proper and safe application.
  • Cleaning and janitorial staff must be trained in WHMIS and other procedures appropriate for this area.
  • All staff in these areas must have proper immunizations including Hep B.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
  • Periodically cleans interior of windows and cleans telephone and other service rooms.
  • Replenish bathrooms with supplies
  • Carry and lift supplies to replenish areas as needed
  • Removing garbage from offices or locations within building
  • On a daily basis, cleans: all entrances and lobbies; stairs and landings; elevators; washrooms; offices; Council Chambers; lounges; Janitors’ room.
  • Weekly, carries out: Mopping and sweeping of floors; vacuums upholstered furniture; removes stains from walls and doors.
Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or GED Equivalent
  • One year experience in a related field.
  • Ability to bend, twist, climb stairs, and lift to perform assigned duties.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with tenants and members of the municipality.
  • Inoculations including Hepatitis B will be required.
  • Good attendance and work record.
  • Must be able to clear criminal records check.
  • Must have own transportation to job location.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Nova Scotia Driver’s License
  • A medical assessment including vision and hearing tests. Medical assessment must show the capacity of performing tasks of the classification

  • Emergency First Aid (Current)
  • WHMIS/GHS
