The
Prevention & Wellness Manager (the “Manager”) will be a licensed Social
Worker in good standing with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers. This
role will lead the Prevention and Wellness team in the delivery of
comprehensive culturally relevant social work services to Wagmatcook children,
youth and families. The Manager will be competent with intake, assessments,
prevention services, child protection, children in care, and foster parent
services. The Manager will work closely with the Prevention Program Supervisor
and Best Interests of the Child Social Worker to work with children, youth and
families on programs and services to meet their individual needs. The Manager will
communicate with other band program staff namely social assistance, health and
education to ensure wrap around services for children, youth and families.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform the general responsibilities of a provincially certified social worker by conducting intake assessments (as required), case planning, case management and other tasks relative to the best interests of the child.
- Interview, mediate, engage and collaborate with children, youth and families to assess their situation and needs to determine the type of prevention services required.
- Perform the work of a social worker including but not limited to coordinating family group counselling and immediate response conferencing in collaboration with Mi’kmaq Child and Family Services Agency of Nova Scotia (MCFSA-NS) to mitigate child apprehension.
- Represent the Band during child welfare hearings, preserve the cultural connection for children, respond to notices, attend and participate in court proceedings, attend training and meetings, apply MBDA, focus on keeping families together and focus on the best interest of the child.
- Provide referrals to other community-based service providers at the school, Health Centre, and social assistance case management program.
- Advocate for clients and families.
- Provide leadership and supervision to the Prevention and Wellness Department staff.
- Promote the professional development of all Prevention and Wellness Department staff.
- Coordinate and collaborate with the Prevention Program Supervisor to develop an appropriate prevention program schedule and budget.
- Collaborate with the Best Interest of the Child Social Worker and Case Aide on specific prevention programs and services for children at risk.
- Prepare and maintain case files and clinical records as part of a case management approach.
- Review case completion reports as they are submitted, following up as required.
- Develop and support the department’s culturally based prevention and wellness programming.
- Collaborate with MCFSA-NS to draw down on prevention program resourcing or funding targeted for Wagmatcook to support prevention programs in community.
- Advocate for children, youth and families to ensure the family unit receives proper and adequate supports.
- Act professionally and dedicate time and effort to supporting children, youth and families.
- Ensure compliance with department standards, Band policies and procedures.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and privacy of all matters related to children, youth and families, also through proper handling of information and secure filing of documents.
- Maintain knowledge on current legislation through relevant resources.
- Ensure all Prevention and Wellness Department staff adhere to operational guidelines, policies, procedures, and confidentiality.
- Attend and/or participate in training, seminars, workshops for continued professional development.
- Attend or plan opportunities to network with, learn and share best practices with colleagues and other professionals in the Prevention and Wellness field.
- Submit reports as requested to senior leadership, Chief and Council, including but not limited to budgetary items.
- Adhere to all Wagmatcook First Nation policies.
- Adhere to all Occupational Health & Safety policies.
- Report any incidents or near misses to the CEO or designate.
- Participate in training and safety programs.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor of Social Work from an accredited post-secondary institution and a minimum of seven years community-based indigenous focused social work.
- Current registration and in good standing with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers.
- Good knowledge of Mi’kmaq culture, language, traditions, history, and values.
- Five (5) years practical experience working in an indigenous child and family services agency.
- Experience in crisis intervention, investigations, and assessment of high-risk situations.
- Previous experience as a Band Designate, an asset.
- Knowledge of project management, budget control, funding application processes.
- Familiarity with relevant legislation, processes and programs, such as CFSA and Jordan’s Principle.
- Ability to maintain client confidentiality and control of highly sensitive information.
- Ability to work effectively in a time sensitive environment.
- Effective time management skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates strong supervisory and leadership skills.
- Proficient technology skills and competencies.
- Willing to take professional development training and workshops.
- Valid Nova Scotia Drivers License, Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check, First Aid & CPR.
Working Conditions:
- Location: On-site office setting, primarily working on Wagmatcook First Nation
- Physical: sitting, standing, lifting, typing, speaking.
- Environmental: indoors – environmentally controlled
