Position Overview:

Employer: Island Eyecare Limited

Title: Technician

Position: Full Time Permanent (35 - 40hrs/week)

Hours of Work: Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday, 8:00AM – 5:00PM; Wednesday, 8:00AM - 7:00PM

Job Location: In-office at 117 Welton Street, Sydney, NS

Proposed Start Date: As soon as possible

Compensation Package: Hourly wage starting at $17.00/hour, based on experience and qualifications. As a Technician at Island Eyecare, you will play a crucial role in supporting both our patients and the clinical team. Reporting to the Manager and working closely with the Optometrists, you'll be responsible for conducting preliminary and auxiliary testing, gathering health information, preparing exam rooms, and ensuring our patients feel comfortable and cared for throughout their visit.

This position requires a hands-on approach, including gently touching the patient’s head, face, or eyelids to ensure testing accuracy - all while providing a calm, friendly, and empathetic experience for each patient.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Greet patients warmly and professionally, helping them feel at ease.
  • Perform pre-exam testing, diagnostic assessments, and auxiliary tests as needed.
  • Collect and accurately record patient health information in our EMR system.
  • Communicate with pharmacies and other healthcare providers to gather additional medical information when required.
  • Maintain smooth patient flow by monitoring the schedule, managing late arrivals, and keeping patients informed.
  • Administer eye drops and document detailed medical histories.
  • Prepare exam rooms by calibrating equipment, sterilizing instruments, and setting up technology.
  • Ensure all patient records and related documents are scanned, filed, and handled with confidentiality.
  • Manage inventory and order pre-test supplies as necessary.
  • Support the team by participating in training, staff meetings, and ongoing development opportunities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across all departments to provide seamless patient care.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


What We’re Looking For:

  • Post-secondary education in sciences and/or commensurate experience is required.
  • CCOA certification or previous experience in an optical setting is an asset but not required.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in a fast-paced, team-oriented setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a genuine interest in patient care.
  • A quick and adaptable learner, enjoys embracing new technologies, and is eager to grow.
  • Able to work independently and take initiative.
  • Committed to upholding privacy, confidentiality, and clinic safety protocols.
  • Able to provide a clear criminal record check and follow all health and safety protocols.
