Description
Cape Breton University (CBU) invites applications for the full-time continuing position of Carpenter within the Facilities Management Department.
Facilities Management is a core department of operations at Cape Breton University. Facilities provides a range of services including the alteration and maintenance of existing facilities, project management, utilities services, the maintenance of residences, and management of the Canada Games Complex. The objective of the Department is to effectively and efficiently deliver a multitude of diverse functions and services in support of the university’s overall mission.
The Carpenter plays a vital role in this mission by contributing to the upkeep and enhancement of university buildings and infrastructure through skilled carpentry and general maintenance of both interior and exterior structures and equipment across campus. This includes framing, drywall, flooring, cabinetry, and various custom building projects such as shelving or staging. The Carpenter may also assist other trades as required and has the opportunity to participate in the annual call-out roster for snow removal support.
The Carpenter will be responsible for performing a wide range of tasks, including from engineering or architectural sketches and specifications, they will estimate material requirements, construct and repair structural elements such as framing, siding, roofing, ceilings, drywall, and flooring, and complete fine carpentry projects including cabinetry and shelving. The role also involves setting up and using scaffolding, rigging, and ladders for elevated tasks, conducting preventive maintenance, and ensuring efficient use of tools and materials. The Carpenter will collaborate with other team members to support campus operations, including assisting with equipment moves and event setups. In winter months, they may elect to participate in the snow removal call-out roster. The Carpenter is expected to follow all safety protocols, operate hand and power tools effectively, and adapt to varied working conditions both indoors and outdoors. Other duties may be assigned by the Manager of Facilities as needed.
This position involves both indoor and outdoor work in varied conditions, including crawlspaces and elevated areas. The Carpenter may be exposed to dirt, dust, fumes, loud noise, and inclement weather. This is a physically demanding role that includes heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders, and prolonged periods of standing or working in confined spaces. Strict adherence to safety protocols and use of appropriate personal protective equipment is required.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Proven experience as a carpenter in construction, maintenance, or facility operations.
- Ability to interpret blueprints, sketches, and technical drawings.
- Proficient in the use of hand and power tools.
- Strong understanding of workplace safety practices.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a physically demanding environment.
- Effective time management and problem-solving skills.
- Willingness to support seasonal or emergency response duties, including snow removal.
