Position Overview:


Under the direction of the Health Director (the “Director”), the Social Worker will be responsible for ensuring the health, safety and well-being of Wagmatcook community members. This will be accomplished through engaging with community members to build resilience and address challenges; participating in cultural activities to improve awareness; and, creating appropriate treatment plans, incorporating indigenous specific treatments whenever possible.

Key Responsibilities, include but are not limited to: 

  • Complete clinical assessments and treatment services following standard clinical practices for documentation, screening, assessment, treatment as outlined by relevant professional regulatory body.
  • Function as a primary therapist within a multidisciplinary team and provide consultation on complex cases and training in evidence-based therapeutic approaches.
  • Provide evidence-based educational and therapeutic groups as well as individual and family therapy.
  • Provide addiction services support to clients and family members.
  • Participate in clinical discussion and case conferences with Nova Scotia Health (NSH), IWK Health Centre staff, clinicians and physicians.
  • Assist the Health Centre staff in accessing appropriate programs and services within Wagmatcook and with external partner organizations and departments.
  • Assist in program planning, quality improvement and program evaluation as required.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation in accordance with the policies of Wagmatcook’s mental health services, and Wagmatcook’s Health Centre.
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality, through proper handling of information and secure filing of documents.
  • Participate in local cultural activities, as appropriate, to facilitate client engagement and improve cultural awareness.
  • Participate on relevant committees.
  • Follow pathways to other services, as developed by the Wagmatcook community working with NSH and IWK as needed to ensure smooth transitions for clients.
  • Maintain positive and courteous interactions with clients, community members, colleagues, service providers, businesses and organizations.
  • Submit reports upon program completion to the Health Director, including but not limited to budgetary items.
  • Participate in training and safety programs.
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality.
  • Adhere to all Wagmatcook First Nation policies.
  • Adhere to all Occupational Health & Safety policies.
  • Report any incidents or near misses to the Director.

Qualifications and Experience:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum two (2) years previous experience in the delivery of a full range of mental health services.
  • Minimum two (2) years previous experience in the provision of individual, family, and group therapy programs to clients in an outpatient mental health setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and across agencies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to ensure client focused care across services and providers.

Education and Experience

  • Master of Social Work (MSW) or currently enrolled preferred, a Master of Psychology or Master of Counselling will also be considered.
  • Registered and licensed with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers, or relevant provincial licensing body.
  • Nonviolent crisis intervention training, or successful completion of training within six months of hiring.
  • Experience in the delivery of brief and short-term solution focused therapy.

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to provide a Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Registry and Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Must have a valid provincial driver’s license and have access to a vehicle.

Effort and Working Conditions

  • In-person, on-site.
  • Travel required, for house visits, relevant training and conferences.
  • Indoors, environmentally controlled.
