Position Summary:

As a Psychologist with Breton Ability, you will deliver specialized clinical services and system-level consultation for individuals with:

  • Intellectual and developmental disabilities
  • Mental health needs
  • Dual diagnoses and complex behavioural presentations

You will work closely with individuals, families, staff, and community partners to design and deliver ethical, evidence-informed, and rights-respecting supports.

Breton Ability is seeking a Psychologist to join our Disability Support Outreach Team (DSOT), a dynamic, interdisciplinary team, driving a once-in-a-generation transformation in disability support services across Nova Scotia.

This is more than a clinical role. You will play a key leadership function in advancing human rights-based, trauma-informed, and person-directed supports, helping individuals live with dignity, autonomy, and meaningful choice.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical & Assessment Leadership

  • Conduct comprehensive psychological assessments (diagnostic, cognitive, behavioural, developmental)
  • Deliver individual and group therapy using evidence-based approaches
  • Develop and guide Individual Program Plans (IPP) and Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Plans
  • Support emotional well-being, skill-building, and community inclusion

Human Rights & Remedy-Aligned Practice

  • Apply a human rights-based framework in all clinical work
  • Support reduced reliance on restrictive practices through proactive behavioural strategies
  • Promote supported decision-making and person-directed planning
  • Identify and escalate rights-based or systemic concerns as appropriate

Consultation, Education & System Impact

  • Provide consultation to interdisciplinary teams, DSP partners, and community agencies
  • Deliver staff training on trauma-informed practice, ethical behaviour support, and rights-based care
  • Support system-level service design and continuous improvement

Supervision & Professional Practice

  • Provide clinical supervision to Behaviour Interventionists and team members
  • Support psychology candidates and practicum students (as applicable)
  • Contribute to quality improvement and accreditation processes

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Psychology from an accredited program
  • Eligible for registration (or candidate registration) with the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology
  • Experience supporting individuals with disabilities, mental health needs, and/or complex behaviours
  • Knowledge of:
    • Psychological assessment and diagnosis
    • Evidence-based therapeutic interventions
    • Trauma-informed and rights-based practice
    • Supported decision-making frameworks 

Work Environment:

  • Community-based role with travel across the service region
  • Combination of office, community, and virtual settings
  • Part-Time 4 Days per week, 32 Hours (with flexibility)
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation required
