The opportunity:

EfficiencyOne is looking for a motivated and passionate Indigenous candidate to join their team as an Energy Manager, working directly with First Nations communities in Nova Scotia.  The position will focus on facilitating a shared vision with the First Nation’s members and developing ongoing partnerships to create more sustainable communities by transforming the way people use energy.  This will involve visits to community locations as well as working with council members, community members, external consultants and contractors, and other stakeholders to promote energy efficiency.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with First Nations communities in Nova Scotia.
  • Collaborate with community leaders and stakeholders to understand their sustainability goals and energy efficiency needs.
  • Conduct outreach and educational activities to raise awareness about energy efficiency and sustainability practices within the communities.
  • Act as a liaison between the communities and EfficiencyOne, ensuring clear and effective communication.
  • Coordinate and administer EfficiencyOne project documentation, incentive applications and project agreements.
  • Work closely with EfficiencyOne's team and external consultants to help identify opportunities for energy efficiency improvements and develop tailored solutions for each community. Support communities with implementation and guidance.
  • Assist with evaluating the success of different projects and programs for continuous improvement.
  • Support EfficiencyOne by maintaining a safe and professional work environment, embracing the organizational culture and being an ambassador for the organization.
Requirements

What Will Help You Succeed?

  • First Nations heritage and understanding of Indigenous cultures and values.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Passion for sustainability and interest in energy efficiency initiatives.
  • Proactive attitude and eagerness to learn and adapt in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to travel to different communities within Cape Breton and mainland Nova Scotia as required.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.
  • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Teams) would be considered an asset.
  • Work remotely/hybrid work arrangement. 

What to expect in your first several weeks on the job:   

In the first week, expect to:

  • Meet with the Senior Energy Manager and Energy Management Services team.
  • Develop a high-level plan for the first 90 days in your role as an Energy Manager and
  • Be prepared to read! Energy Manager service manuals, program manuals, other organizations’ energy management plans, corporate strategic plans, etc. Ensuring you are familiar with reference material is critical to executing your onsite work. 

In the first month, expect to:

  • Become familiar with the people and organizations within the participant communities. Organizational awareness includes understanding people who influence projects and are familiar with the facilities and processes, such as procurement, budget planning, etc.
  • Meet with Efficiency NS Program Managers to better understand project incentives and program processes.
  • Meet with Senior Energy managers to bounce ideas around on strategies and tactics that will increase your influence and impact on the account organization and
  • Meet with the consultant network to explore their services that could be beneficial for your account.

In the first three months, expect to:

  • Build relationships with each of the communities, understanding their unique needs and opportunities.
  • Participate in on-site energy audits and learn about technologies and efficiency solutions.
  • Help with the monitoring, tracking, and reporting for your account, ensuring projects are positively impacting communities.
  • Review business cases for projects, working with contractors, consultants, and account staff.
  • Help build a master list of energy efficiency measures and
  • Provide input for your account’s Energy Management Plan. This plan is a roadmap for your work as an EM and the communities on their path towards sustainability.
