Job Scope: Under the direction of Manager, Supervisor or designate, performs duties that facilitate any and all activities deemed necessary in the maintenance, care, repair and upkeep of arenas.
Salary: As per Collective Agreement
Status: Outside Bargaining Unit 

Main Functions:

  • Leads or assists in the operation and the maintenance of the ice making system, HVAC system, sound and lighting system and rink boards, glass and benches.
  • Leads or assists in the ice making capabilities at the facility including operating and maintaining the ice making plant and related operating systems.
  • Leads or assists a specified group(s) of employees in the execution of their assigned duties.
  • Co-ordinates and supports various work crew or groups of work crews, in the performance of specified tasks, related to arena operations.
  • At the discretion of the General Manager, Supervisor of Operations or the Working Foreman Operator the person will be required to perform various tasks, including required labour, on a regular or daily basis.
  • Assumes responsibility for assigned labour, materials and equipment and follows a reporting system to track maintenance activities.
  • Will be required to perform “on call” duties and to utilize a cell phone as required in the execution of responsibilities.
  • Requisitions required supplies, tools, materials, etc.
  • Prepares and submits reports as required relating to labour, equipment and material requirements for assigned job projects and makes recommendations on matters pertaining to the maintenance of arenas.
  • Ensures that contracted services, purchases of materials, and rentals provided to the municipality are carried out to specifications, in the best interest of the municipality.
  • Participates in the planning and co-ordination of assigned projects.
  • Performs all duties in compliance with established safety practices, policies and regulations.
  • Liaises with other departments as required to perform duties.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of and accountability for all equipment and tools under his assignment used at arenas.
  • Oversees the safety of assigned workers and equipment by instructing individuals in safety procedures and monitoring processes. Takes remedial action when necessary.
  • Carries out other duties as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Grade 12 or GED equivalent (Must include copy)*
  • Must possess and maintain a minimum valid Class V Drivers License (Must include copy)*
  • Experience in a similar or related work setting.
  • Must have a Class 2 Refrigeration Certificate or equivalent (Must include copy)*
  • Basic computer skills operational and functional.
  • Must be certified to operate a fork-lift and scissor lift.
  • Should be certified in First Aid, CPR and WHIMIS.1
  • A medical assessment including vision and hearing tests. Medical assessment must show the capacity of performing tasks of the classification.

  • Emergency First Aid/CPR A/AED (Must include copy)*
  • WHMIS/GHS (Must include copy)*
  • Nova Scotia Fall Protection Training (Must include copy)*
  • Nova Scotia Confined Space Entrant/Attendant Training (Must include copy)*
  • Safe Forklift Operator Training (Must include copy)*
  • Elevated Work Platform Training (Must include copy)*
  • Gas Detection Training  (Must include copy)*
  • Ability to wear an APR Respirator and SCBA as part of Ammonia Response Plan.
