Island Employment, an innovative and dynamic organization with 20+ years of experience in providing employment programs and services to residents of Cape Breton, is currently seeking to fill the full-time term position of Operations Manager at Nova Scotia Works-Island Employment at our Sydney location. 

The Operations Manager plans, organizes, directs, controls and evaluates the operations of client services, develops and implement programs and procedures regarding client planning, training, development, and administration.  The Operations Manager represents management and participates actively on various joint committees to maintain ongoing relations between management/employees/government/clients and the society’s board of directors.


Under the direction of the Executive Director they will be expected to:

  • Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate client services
  • Coordinate internal and external communications
  • Coordinate internal and external training for staff
  • Assure day-to-day efficient operation of office locations and equipment
  • Address client complaints
  • Promote the society’s activities and services as required (Marketing, public relations, publicity)
  • Assist with co-ordination and preparation of written materials outgoing out from the office i.e. publicity, proposals, contracts, and reports
  • Attend all pertinent meetings, training, conferences, and workshops on behalf of the society
  • Maintain and evaluate databases (LaMPSS & GCOS) and information contained within
  • Organization and execution of the society’s administrative duties as required
  • Develop program proposals
  • Assist with Budget preparation and negotiations
  • Create and maintain good working relationship with funding partners such as Service Canada, Employment Nova Scotia, and Department of Community Services amongst others
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor


  • University Degree in Business, or combination of training/experience in the field of Business.
  • 5 years of experience in a management role
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to ensure highest quality of service
  • Demonstrated experience in Proposal Writing
  • Demonstrated experience in Budget Management
  • Demonstrated experience in Government Reporting
  • Use of GCOS & LAMPSS considered an asset
  • Strong understanding and experience of employee management & oversight
  • Adept at program evaluation
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Understanding of inclusionary practice, ethical decision making, and respect for diversity
  • Strong knowledge of employment/career related services, programs and interventions

Salary: $31.31 per hour @ 37.5 hours per week
