Position Summary

Reporting to YMCA of Cape Breton Director of Member Relations the Centre Membership and Program Manager is considered an integral component to ensuring membership and program growth and retention in support of operational and fiduciary objectives. Through collaboration and leadership of Membership and Program staff, the Centre Membership and Program Manager ensures quality member experiences while participating in and engaging in YMCA programs, services, including: scheduling, budgeting, planning, orientation, subsidy management, and staff/volunteer supervision. The Centre Membership and Program Manager is an advocate to support timely and meaningful resolution of member concerns. The YMCA of Cape Breton is looking for a dynamic self-starter to join our Membertou Branch team as Centre Membership and Program Manager.


  • Provide support to membership and program growth and retention strategies by ensuring quality member experiences. Serve as champion for Serving All Members (SAM) Standards, quality commitment and profiling the YMCA as advocate and community partner in support of healthy communities. This includes: promotion of comprehensive YMCA programming, timely issue resolution, maintenance of retention data, front-line support and community engagement.
  • Foster collaborative, service-oriented partnership with external community contacts, agencies, and vendors to ensure delivery of responsive, meaningful programming in support of healthy communities. Provide positive support to programs, special event planning, marketing, and promotional activities to portray YMCA values, program offerings, and mandate delivery.
  • Responsible for administrative functions in support of YMCA mandate and Member Relations Strategy. This includes: cash reconciliation, accounts receivable, third party billing, scheduling, payroll, and compilation and presentation of department reports (i.e. credit card reports, census, etc.).
  • Develop and implement plans to serve and engage the community groups, committees and partnerships related to the needs to the Membertou Community.
  • Ensure inclusive, responsive, values-based management of Financial Assistance Program in effort to provide inclusive programming despite financial barriers.
  • Ensure modeling and championing of YMCA behavioural standards in regard to professionalism and respectful workplace requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Completion of a University or College program in Recreation, Kinesiology, Business Administration, Human Services, Sport Management or a related field
  • 3-5 years’ experience in Member Relations or Program Management
  • Strong customer service/sales skills, with demonstrated ability to build relationships and establish rapport with clients, members and the community
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and presentation skills
  • YMCA Canada Trainer in Fitness or Personal Training is an asset
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including: tact, diplomacy, and ability to establish rapport with clients, members and the community
  • Proven track record of success in community-oriented program delivery through establishing collaborative internal and external working relationships/project teams
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours required
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Note: Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check, Child Abuse Registry Check, and proof of valid First Aid and CPR training. Employees will be required to attend YMCA Child Protection Training.
