Role Description

The Assistant Retail Manager will work with the General Manager to provide & communicate strategic direction and vision for the store with direct accountability for their designated departments.  Ensure operational excellence in retail merchandising, inventory management and customer relations.  Coach and develop Department Managers to provide superior customer service and shopping experiences through execution of strategy, customized for the local market, while achieving budgeted financial results.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provides guidance and assistance to store staff members as directed by General Manager
  • Oversee talent management for designated departments including recruitment, succession planning, orientation, training, performance management and compensation with the General Manager
  • Serve as Store Manager in General Managers absence
  • Work with General Manager to communicate operational requirements, operational changes and store vision
  • Identify current and foreseen operating situations and inform General Manager in a timely manner to facilitate a solution.
  • Suggest rule or policy changes to General Manager when you think such a rule would improve efficiency, morale, operations, profits, sales, etc.
  • Be a positive role model by following company procedures.
  • Ensure community presence by working with total store and community partners to host/support community events
  • Create a shopping experience that engages customers in a way that enhances loyalty, sales, and profit
  • Ensure all applicable policies and procedures are communicated and adhered to
  • Ensure that OH&S, food safety, and other regulatory requirements and procedures are implemented and maintained.
  • Ensure sales floor and staff are ready for all promotions
  • Ensure efficient operation of the business to achieve all financial targets and deliver on budgeted KPI’s with direct accountability for designated departments
  • Maintain knowledge of current industry trends
  • Coordinate maintenance of store equipment and repairs
  • Take appropriate disciplinary action(s) when employees are guilty of violating company rules and/or policies.
  • Act in a timely manner when taking disciplinary action or acknowledging positive behavior by employees; maintain records of such actions
  • Be aware of shoplifting and take action, consistent with company policy, to discourage it.
  • Greet and assist customers on the sales floor.
  • Resolve customer claims and/or complaints in a timely manner consistent with company policy
  • Other duties as required by General Manager

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Degree, diploma or certificate in Business or Retail related program preferred
  • Ability to lead
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Work a flexible schedule (including mornings, evenings and weekends)
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Exposure to varying temperatures
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Able to work in a fast paced environment
  • 2-3 years of retail experience an asset
  • Strong financial knowledge an asset
