PURPOSE:
Reporting to the Manager of CBU Recreation Services, the Recreation Sports Coordinator is responsible and accountable for development and delivery of comprehensive and inclusive recreation programs to enhance the health and well-being of our students, faculty, staff and community members. Responsible for all aspects relating to the planning, operating and maintenance of the Athletics and Recreation facilities.

Student access and an improved student experience are key objectives of the Coordinator. The Coordinator is responsible to optimize facility use and balancing programming requirements to allow for maximization of space. Oversee the related Recreation budget and provides programming to meet the varied needs of students, faculty, staff and community members: intramural, clubs and recreation. The Coordinator participates in annual and long-term planning and resource allocation. This key leadership role interfaces Varsity Athletics, Recreation, campus departments, students, faculty, staff and community groups. The position involves a high degree of independent decision-making, responsibility and personal initiative.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Recreation programs planning, organizing, delivery and evaluation. Involves hiring, instructor training and evaluating instructors, student staff and volunteers. Organizing and delivering a safe, quality program in many fields which include; Intramural sports, tournaments, special events and open recreation. The Coordinator will also assume the responsibilities for communications and public relations.
    • Work closely with the Manager of CBU Recreation Services to implement a facility usage plan to best maximize facility space in support of departmental strategies.
    • Responsible for the financial planning, monitoring and management for their program area including intramural leagues activities, equipment purchases, and employees.
    • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate intramural staff such as attendants, league/tournament supervisors and officials as well as manage payroll for staff.
    • Oversee the web based IMLeagues, which includes, league/tournament postings, registration, schedules and statistic reports.
    • Plan, supervise and promote Open Recreation activities and ensure equipment availability.
    • Communicate effectively with open recreation participants with regards to activity schedules, cancellations and additional opportunities.
    • Assist with the development of policies and procedures to ensure safe and fair play. Apply best practices and compliance in carrying out policies and procedures.
    • Support a culture which resolves concerns and issues in a timely fashion in accordance with appropriate compliance, policies and procedures.
    • Assist with the development and management of an efficient communication strategy which promotes the engagement of students, faculty and staff in areas such as recreation programs, events and facility availability. Ensure the upkeep and maintenance of the CBU Rec website.
    • Liaise with appropriate internal departments/organizations such as student life, creative arts, student union and societies to assess student needs.
    • Promote the marketing and communications brand with an outcome of evolving healthy and active behaviours for the campus community. Use of web, social media, email, print media and other communication channels to successfully promote recreation, intramural and club activities to students and the community. Develops printed work for Programs brochure.
    • Build a library of promotional material such as articles, photos, videos, highlighting the student experience through recreation aimed to support the recruitment and retention of CBU students.
    • Capital asset management relating to department invoices and expenditures including equipment life and replacement planning strategy to ensure program quality and facility risk management objectives are achieved.
    • Coordinate regular facility and equipment availability, checks, and maintenance for the recreation facilities.
    • Assist with the development and implementation of risk management policies as they relate to Intramural sports/tournaments/special events and open sports.
    • Lead a student development program where student employees deliver the programs and manage the facilities with practical learning opportunities. Learning outcomes to include transferrable skills in leadership, customer experience, conflict management, equity, diversity, inclusion, sustainability and communication. The supervisory role will include hiring, training and evaluating part-time student and work-study placements. Prepares staff schedules and payroll forms.
    • Assist the Manager with developing and maintaining relationships with campus, community groups, societies, clubs, SPAL department, Residence Life and CBRM Recreation and others to encourage, enable and support participation in recreational pursuits both on and off campus. Provide advice and guidance to community, staff/faculty, members and students regarding use of facility space. Primary contact for facility services and campus security in regards to the recreation facilities.
    • Support new market niches by networking and partnering with corporations and other professional organizations. Organize and run various special events including workshops, fundraisers, event days and other similar activities designed to generate revenue.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Manager of Recreation Services

 

Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree in Physical Education, Recreation, Kinesiology or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in sport, wellness, health, well-being, active living & recreation administration, facility management, and marketing & promotion skills is an asset
  • Knowledge and interest in university and community recreation development.
  • Understanding of all aspects of Risk Management with respect to health and safety.
  • Excellent organizational, time management and planning skills.
  • Knowledge of the local and regional community would be an asset.
  • Minimum 1-3 years related experience
