Marine Atlantic is currently looking for a Marine Superintendent to work with our Fleet Operations department, located in North Sydney, NS.

The Operations Division is the largest division within Marine Atlantic and includes the major functional area of Fleet Operations. The focus of the Operations Division is to provide safe and reliable service for all of Marine Atlantic’s customers. Fleet Operations ensures that the fleet put into service is operated effectively and safely to meet schedule and customer requirements.
Working under the direction of the Director of Fleet Operations, The Marine Superintendent provides functional support, coaching and mentoring to vessel Masters, and Chief Officers and ensures that operations are carried out in accordance with Company policy, government regulations, prescribed budgets and Shipboard Management Concepts.
Additional Key Areas of Responsibility
- Review ISM and other Company Manuals to ensure procedures comply with regulations, are consistent with industry best practice and are organized in a coherent manner.
- Designated Person Ashore: Promote the principles of safety management and address any issues or concerns raised by vessel employees with regards to safety management of the vessels if required to act as DPA or Alternate
- Liase with Transport Canada Marine Safety Branch and Classification societies to ensure vessels maintain their certification and comply with all regulations.
- Assist Masters, and Chief Officers in developing specifications for work taking place in Planned Work Periods and Drydockings.
- Ensure vessel maintenance in the Deck Department takes place as planned on schedule. Participate and support in effective planning of vessel inspections, new equipment procedures and repairs.
- Review Navigation procedures and ensure navigation practices are maintained to a high standard.
- Review shipboard meeting reports; liaise with the vessel team on actions and closure.
- Review Master end of shift report and notes for any Operations related matters and ensure close dialogue with different departments on follow up actions and closure.
- Support and provide input to the Company Emergency Response Team during maritime emergencies.
- Prepare to carry out, lead, coordinate, or participate in inspections, audits, incident investigation, as required.
- Keep current on new and retroactive laws and regulations affecting marine operations and keep abreast with best industry practices.
- Work diligently, to promote a physically and psychologically safe working environment, that is diverse, accessible, inclusive and equitable.
- Assist in the accomplishment of company objectives by performing other related duties as required.
Requirements
What qualifications do I need to be considered for this opportunity?
Must have sailed in a Senior Officer role for a minimum of 3 years.
Education
Must hold, as a minimum, a Technical Diploma or Degree, and a Master Near Coastal Certificate.
OR
A combination of equivalent education, job-related training, and work experience in a related position.
Additional Qualifications
- Strong understanding of ISM.
- Strong understanding of Canadian Flag requirements and regulations, classification society rules and regulations and the Delegated Statutory Inspection Program.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Customer Service Oriented.
- Computer literate and comfortable using Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
Asset Qualifications
- A Master Mariner Certificate.
- Experience working as a Master.
- Experience working with an Integrated Management System.
- Experience working with passenger vessels.
- Experience in Project Management
Salary: $102,331.85 to $127,914.81
