The Department of Experiential Studies in Community and Sport (XCS) in the School of Arts & Social Sciences at CBU invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (depending on current achieved rank). This position will commence September 1st (or as soon as possible thereafter).

The successful candidate will contribute to the XCS department, which houses the core interdisciplinary Community Studies (COMS) courses for the Bachelor of Arts Community Studies (BACS) degree, as well as the courses for one of the BACS degree’s most popular disciplines: Sport and Physical Activity Leadership (SPAL).

The successful candidate will be prepared to teach in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment and be familiar with a range of progressive pedagogies, including but not limited to: i) self-directed learning, ii) reflexive intra-personal learning, iii) group/inter-personal development, iv) experiential learning, and v) community-based and/or service learning. Evidence of engagement with the scholarship of teaching and learning and/or adult learning principles will be considered an asset.

The successful candidate must have the ability to lead courses related to our community studies degree core themes of research, community, and leadership. In addition, the candidate’s research trajectory, teaching, and service should intersect with issues related to equity and accessibility. Preferably, the candidate could also teach one or more of the following topics in the SPAL degree program: physical literacy, movement skills, fitness, and/or outdoor learning.

Finally, the successful candidate will be committed and passionate about building deep and reciprocal relationships with Cape Breton communities centered on sport/physical activity/leisure/recreation/health as informed by their disciplinary expertise. Prior experience and/or a strong interest in fostering community and community capacity through service-related activities is a strong asset.

The union affiliation of this position is with the Cape Breton Faculty Association.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in any discipline related to the study of sport, physical activity, or recreation broadly defined. Candidates who are in the later stages of their PhD may be considered with the successful completion of the PhD being a condition of employment.
