The Department of Education at Cape Breton University invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Teaching in Literacy Education. The appointment will be effective July 1, 2023 or soon afterwards.
The impact of strong literacy education permeates a student’s experience and influences their future success. Applicants for the position of Assistant Professor of Teaching in Literacy Education must demonstrate a strong understanding of curriculum, planning, instruction, and assessment as it relates to literacy in the elementary and secondary school context. Applicants are expected to have experience working within P-12 school systems and community contexts as well as successful university-level teaching in teacher education courses. Preference will be given to applicants who are familiar with the Nova Scotia P-12 English Language Arts curriculum and demonstrate expertise in universal design for learning (UDL), multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS), culturally responsive pedagogies (CRP), and social and emotional learning (SEL). Applicants must show potential to make educational leadership contributions through innovative course design and delivery.
While it is preferred that applicants have an earned doctoral degree in literacy education, M.Ed. prepared educators may also be considered with a commitment to complete a doctorate program . The successful candidate is expected to develop and teach in-person and/or online undergraduate and/or graduate courses in literacy education. Teaching is assigned in accordance with the collective agreement. The successful candidate will be expected to assume educational leadership responsibilities, such as curriculum development, evaluation, innovation, course coordination, graduate teaching assistant supervision, and other leadership roles.
The union affiliation of this position is with the Cape Breton University Faculty Association.
Requirements
While it is preferred that applicants have an earned doctoral degree in literacy education, M.Ed. prepared educators may also be considered with a commitment to complete a doctorate program.
Experience teaching in a post secondary setting.
Experience teaching in the P-12 education system.
