Hours of Work: Monday – Friday with occasional evenings/weekends.

Job Location: Sydney, Nova Scotia (Hybrid Option)

Compensation Package: $60,000 - $80,000 based on experience

The Highland Arts Theatre, affectionately known as “The HAT”, is a performance venue in downtown, Sydney, Nova Scotia in the heart of beautiful Cape Breton Island. They are the first Professional Community-Funded Theatre in Canada, championing a new operating model known as Radical Access, which allows the HAT to offer tickets to all Mainstage Productions via Pay-What-You-Choose Donations or Free of Charge for those in need. The Highland Arts Theatre Association is a non-profit organization registered under the Societies Act of Nova Scotia and a registered charity with the CRA. They are a Professional Member of Theatre of Nova Scotia, Playwrights Atlantic Resource Centre, and a member of the Sydney & Area Chamber of Commerce. The HAT Academy, a training program for emerging and professional artists, offering 20 distinct programs launched in 2019 for those aged 5 to seniors. In 2020, a new operating model known as the Radical Access program was launched, which is a crowd-sourcing model that allows the HAT to offer all Mainstage Productions free of charge.

As the General Manager you will be working alongside and in concert with the Artistic & Executive Director. You will be responsible leading the day-to-day operation of the organization, including but not limited to human resources, financial management, fundraising & business development, grant writing along with other duties as noted below.

Core Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for ensuring that the HAT is staffed based on seasonal needs and is operating within the budget parameters provided
  • Responsible for the day-to-day human resource management needs of the team including but not limited to the hiring and onboarding of team members, day to day support and management of the team and resolving employee, staff and volunteer issues.
  • Manage general operating budgets and expenses in conjunction with the Artistic & Executive Director
  • Responsible for fundraising and business development, including but not limited to:
    • Building partnerships with government, community organizations, potential sponsors, fundraising and stewardship of donors and sponsors, grant writing and actively pursuing new business opportunities
  • Responsible for the assistance with Government Liaising and advocating on behalf of the theatre at all levels of government
  • Assist with marketing, promotions, and implementation of marketing strategies in conjunction with the Communications and Marketing leads.
  • Prepare contracts for Artists and Staff in conjunction with the Artistic & Executive Director.
  • Increase audiences and community engagement by creating, expanding and implementing an innovative and fresh approach to connecting with the broader community
  • Foster and encourage continued growth and development of theatre for community
  • Support the Artistic & Executive Director with other duties and responsibilities as assigned


  • Minimum of 5 years leadership experience in a mid to senior level position
  • Sound understanding of budgets, financial management and funding application writing
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally
  • Exceptional time management abilities
  • A passionate individual who will advocate on behalf of the theatre, the community, and its team members
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors, donors, and community and government-based sponsors
